Gartmore Emerging Markets Opportunities
Chris Palmer’s Gartmore Emerging Markets Opportunities Fund has one of the longest track records in the sector. One of the main reasons for the funds longevity has been the robust research processes that Gartmore apply to the management of emerging market funds. As important as the stock selection, which combines quantitative screening with fundamental stock selection, is the selling discipline that the fund employs. The fund aims to be a consistent performer, whilst still effectively managing risk.

Jupiter China
Fund manager, Philip Ehrmann, avoids the often thwart corporate governance and accounting pitfalls of investing directly into the Chinese stock market, by predominantly gaining exposure to China through markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. Ermann has over 15 years of experience in managing emerging market funds and has China fund experience going back to 2002 (although only 2006 with Jupiter). There are some high risk funds that gain exposure to China; this fund, though definitely still high risk is one of the more defensive China ‘only’ funds.

New Star Property
Managed by Roger Dossett and Gregor Logan the New Star Property Fund invests into ‘bricks and mortar’ i.e. real commercial property and the shares of commercial property companies. There has been some debate between supporters of bricks and mortar and property share. As an asset class, we believe bricks and mortar is a truer type of asset, as opposed property share; however, the easily tradable share element adds liquidity. The New Star Property invests in both bricks and mortar (up to 80%) and property share.
