Chartwell believe it is important to look beyond the clearly observable past performance of funds. Because different market conditions bring different fund managers to the top of performance tables, it’s important to understand how a manager delivers their returns. It may be that they are taking too much risk (there are many funds that deliver top performance one year, only to languish near the bottom the next); or there may be an apparently poor performing fund where the manager is simply being very conservative in their investment decisions.
Our approach is to screen the huge universe of funds by sector across different market conditions and time frames. Chartwell’s fund research specialists are able to call upon a wealth of experience and investment tools to help them see through the noise of markets to see what’s really going on. We do all of this so that you don’t have to.
As well as past performance, we also look at the risk that has or has not been taken by the manager and try to understand the culture and outlook of the investment company the fund manager works for. Crucially, we also believe it’s important to meet with the fund managers and understand their process and character. We research hundreds of funds each year and personally meet with over 150 managers annually to ensure that we only advocate funds to our clients that we have full confidence in. It is impossible to create an effective Portfolio without understanding the constituent parts.
